Tanita-san: 183.8
Captured the lost ground. Back to lowest journey weight again. Just want some progress beyond this by last weigh-in for StS. As long as I do what I ought and don't go salt-nuts (as I am wont to do), should be fine.
I had such a long-winded post last time, hey, got nothing here. Plan to walk today. Cancelled my Pilates classes this week due to hubby's trip/hurricane worries, but now we're not gonna get hit and hubby's trip was rescheduled. Yay to both. But I still gotta move.
If you are interested in a possible challenge I'm pondering, read the long-long-long-looong previous post. I only want folks who will commit to hang in for the full challenge, be the weeks good or bad, breezy or excruciating, joyful or depressed, milestones or setbacks. I want folks willing to lay it out there, good or bad, no excuses. AND A WEIGHT NUMBER. No hiding.
We give power to the damn scale number when we don't voice it. What's covered up is made to seem shameful. What's hidden is given more power than it should have. Set yourself free. Post the damn number and empower YOURSELF. Own it.
I've always told people my real weight, when I was 299 (and I'd round it up to 300). I didn't see any reason to lie. Trust me. People look at you and if you're obese, they know you're fat. They know you ain't 130 lbs. Lying about one's weight is just kinda weird. Hiding is...a way of admitting shame. And I think shame is already enough part of the equation. It's best to let it loose, release the number, and start getting over the embarrassment. Can't hide being really fat. People've got eyes. So, why hide a number when the evidence is right there in 3-D?
I'm 51. I'm 183.8 lbs.
So what? Do you like me less cause it ain't 125? Do you like me more cause it ain't 299?
It's just numbers...
And, well, I guess I did have something to say. :)
Later, be well...

Slimmer This Summer Challenge Update: Complacency Goeth Before the Fall...Or Rise (in weight)-- 1.2 Pounds UP as other things take the stage. Looking for balance, organization, and getting that number back DOWN! But, hey, my hair--and hubby's, too-- looks great. Pics included.
Hey, all. I meant to do an update yesterday for Slimmer This Summer, weighed in and everything before heading out the door for assorted activities, but came hope late and still had stuff to do--laundry, cooking hubby's Monday lunch, packing the 2 lunches and snacks--and yes, he eats two lunches to keep from being too skinny since he gave up all grains except rice and all starchy veggies except potatoes and a bit or corn now and then.
Wish I had that problem.
My problem this week came from Tanita-san's numerical glare: 185.0
Sheesh. 1.2 pounds UP from last Sunday. UPPPPPP. UPPPP.
Yeah, and only me to blame. No excuses. I simply got lax and comfy. I am so happy where I am, even as fat as I am--cause we can't call 185 lbs sleek, now can we?--but so energetic and so flexible and feel so good and feel cute and get tons of compliments and hubby's adoring my new bod, and, yes, still so happy to be officially NOT obese, that my motivation just fizzled. If I don't watch out, I'll be officially obese again.
Dang.
But part of creating this blog and joining this challenge was being accountable. I have to report the BAD, not just the good. And here it is. The bad.
Let me correct a point: It's not fizzled altogether, the motivation. I still counted calories. I still exercised. I still drank my requisite fluids. I still took vitamins and blogged and read inspirational snippets and visited fatfighters online.
Fizzled as in not scrupulous, not as focused.
Part is that I've begun a new HUGE project, almost as huge as losing weight, and that has sapped a lot of my focus. I"m doing two new things, the HUGE organization of my clutter/healing of my hoarding/simplifying life thing, and getting back to serious Bible study, which also takes a couple hours a day. Between all those hours and that divided focus, weight loss seems to not be my sole-super-duper-main-supreme-above-all focus. This means calorie creep and exercise whittling.
Sucks, but I am NOT a multi-tasker. When I take on another huge project, the others suffer.
But I have to find a way to do it all. I am envious of folks who can do many major things at once--Allan, formerly of Almost Gastric Bypass blog(s), and his career expansion while undertaking major weight loss and overseeing challenges comes to mind, as well as those of you dealing with challenging new jobs while losing, or bearing and rearing new babies while losing. I admire the ability to do that and hope I can develop some of it. But me, I tend to need to focus on ONE BIG THING at a time.
I focused on weight loss for the last year. The economic realities of our current nation means it's imperative for us to simplify and be ready to sell and move in short order as needed. This is why I am tackling this BEFORE reaching goal weight. I decided reaching non-obese goal would have to be the cut-off.
So, this week, I need to find the internal drive and energy to give more than one thing priority. I can't let myself lose all momentum and regain to the point of waking up and finding I have 20 pounds back on me! No, sir.
185.0
Sheesh.
Okay, new week. New obstacles. New refocusing. And let's see how talented I can get at organizing multiple projects.
This past week, my exercise was:
1x swimming
4x walking
2x Pilates with trainer
Fluids: fine
Prayer: yes, praying for y'all
Push-ups= worked on them x2
Waist: Still 36 (dang)
Quitting: No, but I need to learn new skills, clearly, to regain progress-making mojo
I'm not depressed or bummed, mind you. I am simply more in "problem resolution" mode. I assumed that having a couple of 1600 calorie days and a 1750ish day, which should not have impeded me at 185 active pounds, BUT THEY DID. It seems that I will have to revise goal weight. I will not live with any weight that requires me to LIVE FOREVER on 1200 calories. Forget it. I'd rather stay fat. The lowest I'm willing to go, lifelong, is 1400 to 1500. I find that a livable range, whereas I find 1200 too restrictive for life. It doesn't seem a like a lot of leeway, but that's yogurt and fruit plus nuts worth. That's a salad with chicken's worth. It is a big difference for those of us who've done the 1200.
I know I'm metabolically lower than many. I knew that a year ago from tracking. I don't maintain of my weight in the range the charts I've seen state. I maintain on my weight on the range minus 300 (if it's consistent with my previous estimates, which probably is WRONG, and it's more complicated formula-wise,, but I'll worry about the math some other day). I'll find out in time. But after this week, when I ranged from 1400 to 1600 a day for all but one day, the weigh-in comes as a slap of reality to realize that, yes, I will never ever ever eat remotely like I used to. NOT REMOTELY...and I knew that intellectually, but I know it now in actuality. While exercising THAT much, I still can't eat much at this lower weight.
We will see how this unwinds...
TWO weeks until SLIMMER THIS SUMMER ends. I'd like to end it at least at 182 (or less). Let's see how that goes, shall we? :D
Oh, and we had an Aveda hair spa day Saturday, hubby and I:
I wish all challengers well in this final stretch. I hope I didn't let too many of you down with this week's uptick and my motivation's semi-fizzling.
Be well, all...
Wish I had that problem.

Day 34 in Slimmer This Summer Challenge, Part II: 110 Pounds Lost as of Today! And my assorted updates for the Challenge...
Well, 110.4 lost. :)
It's nice to cross another small boundary after a mild setback. I'm not on target for loss for the challenge--I'd have to be down 7.5 lbs by now for that, and I'm only down 6.4. So about a pound lagging to be ON goal. But the scale is moving properly downward again.
I was planning to do the challenge update tomorrow, but I'll just placemark this so I can linky up. I forgot to linky last week and wanted to make sure to chime in. If I feel like adding more, I will. Or I won't. Either way, this is my update. I'd originally planned to do it on Monday, but, eh. Might get busy.
~I did not eat 100% on plan this past week, but I did better than the previous one.
~I did have exercise nearly daily. Walking, swimming, playing Pilates.
~Water was great.
~Tracking calories daily, yes--but not always on SparkPeople.
~Trying to stay on top of blogging and hoping I'm not boring the swim shorts off ya.
~I did forget to pray for y'all on a couple of the more rushed days or cause my heart was praying heavy for something else so focusedly that, honestly, it's only on looking back that I realized, "Whoa, I missed that goal."
~I did hit up some blogs for support. :) Hope I was able to cheer some of you.
Mood is back to normal chipper me. Clothes are looser--can one pound plus make that much difference, or is it muscle to fat shift, too?
Will try to do even better this week. My apologies for where I fell short. Onwad...
And to close out, my eyes are on a short-term goal: I just need to lose 3.6 more pounds to NOT BE OBESE anymore. Getting there, getting there...
Ah, sorry if this is a lousy update. I'm so summer-distracted. :D
Happy Challenging, people!

Day 26 of P5: Struggling with the Sleep, Salt Cravings Again, Scale Stasis, New Gadget Thanks to Allan, and Need to Bag Up Clothes from Winter....and get new stuff soon for SPRING! Oh, and stretch those hip flexors for better sex....seriously....
No movement on Tanita-San, which is mildly frustrating. Only mildly, cause I really just want to fix my sleep schedule, and that's my priority. Once I fix that, the scale will move.
I know. This has happened in cycles before.
I was not at all surprised by those recent circulated study findings correlating sleep and weight. I've always noticed that when I can't sleep well (as evidenced by these bags and circles under my eyes and the general loss of energy), I can't lose well. Or lose, period. I go into a holding pattern.
I don't know the science/physiology behind it, but I know in my life, it's true. To fight fat, I need good rest, good sleep.
I'm totally messed up now. Been hitting the sack anywhere from 4:30 am to 6:30 am and getting up anywhere from 9:30 am on. I only got one good "night's" rest this week. One day was less than 4 hours, the others in the 5 hour range. That is a far cry from my natural need, which is about 81/2 to 9 hours when I'm well, 10+ when I'm not.
I can't make up for it Saturday, as the cable guy is coming....so we need to be up. No late sleep.
Catch up sleep doesnt' work too well in middle-age, I've noticed. It takes anywhere from 2 days of good rest to up to a week for me to feel normal again in terms of energy, appetite, and weight loss.
Well, we'll get it done!
I'm also fighting those salt cravings again. I just want to dive into a bowl of salted nuts or salted roasted veggies or salted crusty bread or blackened salty chicken breast or salted lettuce or...salted salt. Demon! Demon sodium chloride, begone!
On the positive front: I got a cool little doohickey called a VIA Heart by New Balance. It's like a jacked up pedometer you clip on to your clothes/belt that measures not just time and steps, but distance, calories burned and pulse rate. That's pretty cool. I just put on a watch to walk, so it will be fun to have other measures handy...once I figure out how to work it, as I'm a stupid-butt when it comes to technology --and thank God for being married to a computer dude or I wouldn't know what to do when my laptop goes funky! Thanks, A!
I couldn't find a pic of the exact one I have--a gray and orange red Via Heart--but this one is kinda close to how it looks:
I have some new piles of clothes that I need to separate and bag. I lost another inch off my hips/belly area and my new bras are already on hooks set number 2 (out of the three, the middle one). I'll have to hit Lane Bryant or the mall soon for a couple new ones (sports and regular) so that I don't get caught with ungainly bras like I did last time. I'm gonna be prepared to keep the puppies happy and uplifted.
I figure another couple bags of clothes will be ready for donation by weekend's end. More space for me. I even have some bras I never got to wear and won't now since my size is radically different--on top of which I found out I was DD and not just D, and had been wearing the wrong cup size for AGES....a good fit makes a huge difference in appearance and comfort. Glad I got sized. Need to be resized before buying new ones, too.
I can tell I've lost more off my belly. The skin saggage is worse. Bleh. Not a pretty sight, the deflating tumtum. I even apologized to hubby for deforming my body and having it such a state now as a consequence, so that he has to see the saggage as I walk around nekkid (a habit, and I sleep commando, so it's not like I'm hiding the damage.)
He said, "What are you apologizing for!? You're gorgeous. And you're amazing." And I promptly jumped his bones and showed just how amazing.
Um...Pavlovian response to glowing and sparkly husbandly adoration of my whack body.
Sex Note: Those hip flexor stretches on the Cadillac in Pilates. OMG. Yes. You want to stretch those babies. Amazing positions are possible even if you're still fat!
Well, getting rid of the "interference" makes it better, too. Less stuff in the way, more closeness, more nimbleness.
Do some stretching today after your walk or cardio or strength-training. Don't forget those hips. Wink, wink.
Be well today, and here's to all of us sleeping well tonight...

Day 6 Phase 4: Recap of Yesterday's Challenge Particulars, The Vexing Scale, Exercise, Sore Butt, Primo Poops, Great Mood, Not Hungry on Waking, Plumbing Frustrations, Food Temptation Tomorrow at 3 Kings Day Belated Celebration, and it's Walk Day!
The second week of 2011 BEGINS....and I wake up....and I get on the scale cause I
sometimes get Allan my weigh-in result prior to Sunday so I don't miss the deadline...and...
Huh. Hmm.
235.2.
Heh?
I guess I'll wait till tomorrow and see if I can erase this from my memory...with a better result.
235.2 is .2 lbs MORE than last Sunday's official challenge start. MORE! (Culprit: Ham steak for dinner, maybe? 100 calories but like 800 sodium grams? But I had potato with it, and that has balancing potassium, AND I took 2 potassium supplements as well and drank 3 cups green tea.)
I'm glad I fortified myself with Beth's comment in my previous post this AM. Because what she said is true. Anyone who has dieted for any extended period of time (ie, more than a couple months) knows the weirdnesses and the whooshes and the retentions and the retrograde wackiness.
I think I moped for all of 10 minutes then got on to making my ON PLAN breakfast. Interesting phenomenon: Not very hungry.
Yesterday: Calories 1277. Water: Done + Exercise: Squats and torso raises. (I can't do side lunges, period, so I do side lunge "equivalents"--ie, exercises that work THOSE muscles--with my trainer on Monday and Thursdays to spare my damaged knees/ankle.) Hunger: hungry on awakening, no weird hunger at night. The protein emphasis on the later snack helped loads, I think, with me waking up food-calm.
Exercise note: I had gotten a phone call after doing my squats (oh, lawdy, oh, lawdy, ouchie), and got sidetracked. Realized shortly before bedtime I never did my torso raises, so I got my mat out, got on the floor, and did my 4 sets of 10. Yes! I also did tabletop leg divided The Hundred, some roll ups and roll downs, some crunches, and some stretches. Figured might as well while I was down there anyway....
Today, MY BUTT IS KILLING ME!
I'm sitting on a fluffy pillow as I type. Seriously. Owie. Isn't that great? I love being exercise sore (as long as I can, ya know, MOVE). If you aren't sore the day after exercising, let's face it, you didn't work it. Not pain--pain as in you hurt your joint or pulled a muscle. No...soreness. Soreness that said you stressed that muscle and it's gonna build up more tissue. Yes! More muscle. Give me MORE muscle!
While my butt may be sore, my poops are great. If you're following the Phase 4 Packet, you shouldn't be having poop issues (like I did on the low carb at times). Man, I go like 4 times a day...love it. Love cleaning things out.
Speaking of Cleaning Out: We had the plumber here day before yesterday to unclog a big clog. Now hubby and the exterminator, on the rounds of the building, noticed some sort of water leak in the back/side. Oh, gosh, another plumber visit. The cost of plumbers is numbing, but got no choice. I'm scared the leak may end up being a costly thing. Egads....I want to win the Lottoa nd have a custom made, spanking new home with indestructible pipes. How much is that? ; )
So, today's requirement, besides the 1200 cals and the 143 oz water is to WALK. So, today, sometime after cable man/plumber/exterminator trifecta--we walk! (I wonder if all those bathroom runs add up to some sort of exercise?)
Tomorrow it's our belated Christmas, so I assume some food temptations will be around. I plan to just take my own stuff. Makes life easier, frankly. I don't even want to look at fancy food right now. I'll take presents and probably the salad/yogurt or sandwich option (easiest to carry) and some hummus/carrots for my snack (as we'll stay longer than just one meal). Hubby loves sammies and salads and carrots and hummus, so with enough for two, we're covered, foodwise and can focus on playing Scrabble, video games, backyard toss/catch or whatever the kids are running around doing. As Allan says, it's about family, NOT food, even if it's BELATED, that's still how it is.
I hope today you have a kinder scale than I do, and that we all keep our zen calm as we face each meal/snack/temptation.

The Tapas Won...and so did Taco Bell. Dang.
728 days to go...
I had allowed plenty of calories for the party. I did fine with the omelette and Serrano ham and Machego cheese and garbanzos with chorizo. I didn't have much rice (though, really, I should have skipped that). I skipped cake and had some Valrhona dark chocolate and 1/2 cup of of soft serve ice cream with strawberries and crunch (this last is, in my opinion, the worst choice at supper, since it was reflexive and it wasn't even all that good. It was the, 'oh, it's time for dessert" rather than the "this is amazing and I a gonna have a treat". Waste of calories.)
Then that weird "it's later evening and I wanna eat" impulse that has always been my downfall through the decades hit. Weird, as I hadn't felt the late night snackies hit that often this summer. So:
1 2 inch slice of French bread with olive oil
2 tacos and 1 enchirito at Taco Bell
What? What the hell was that? I'd been doing well with fast food so what hit that?
(Note: I do want to say that a typical Taco Bell visit last year would have been easily double that order, sometimes triple. I have had meals that included 2 tacos, 1 taco salad (sans shell, which is icky) or burrito and nachos. Or 3 tacos and 1 burrito. Or 2 burritos and 1 or 2 tacos. Yes, I could eat that much. A person doesn't get to 300 lbs eating just 2 tacos.)
I'm assuming that the sugary dessert and carby French bread evening double-carby-damage splurge set me up for the impulsive "on the drive home" detour to crappy fast food.
My appetite is a much calmer beast when I avoid the white bread, white rice, and sugar and load up on protein and fiber. I don't buy white bread for the house, haven't in years. I can eat a whole loaf of French bread (with butter or EVOO or cheese). It's like what potato chips are for other people. A trigger to "not just have one".
We have one excellent, one pretty good, and a couple so-so Mexican places in my neighborhood. Had I wanted a really good taco or enchilada, I could have hit one of those places. Why Taco Bell? Cause it was there
Yeah. I'm in the car, my late-night-snack-frenzied mind is looking at the shiny signs as hubby drives home. My brain is working at it, feverishly, steadily, like some sort of stalker--what can we stop for? What? What?
I keep saying no, no, no, but the will power caves and you pick whatever is your last chance before the turn into "no restaurant avenue to the house".
It's a sickness, I swear. It's like a junkie.
I know some of you out there have this same thing happen. It's like your body is possessed, right? Geez, I hate that feeling.
And over Taco Bell? Let's fac it: Food there's not even that good. Really. I know what good Mexican food tastes like--had it homemade by Mexicans, had it in a Zagat-rated restaurant, had it from a Mexican family down south who dish home recipes from a truck.
Taco Bell ain't good Mexican and it's not even good food, period.
It's just the salt-fat delivery system. Prolly sugar, too, if the sauce is accounted for.
Fat-salt-sugar for the junkie.
Anyway, I woke up, saw the 1.5 bloat and prolly some fat (though I suspect mostly bloat) price on the scale.
And today, it's back to eating for a calm brain. I hate the "desperation brain" that sugar foists on me.
